Bare Wall Space

Bare Wall Space is built by and for Bare Wall Studio as a platform for multidisciplinary activity. Conceived beyond the conventional boundaries of a design studio, it brings together work, collaboration, creative exchange and cultural activity within an environment that can continually adapt to its users.

The space reflects the way creative practice naturally moves between different modes of engagement. During the day, it functions as a working studio for Bare Wall Studio and other creative minds, accommodating focused work, reviews, meetings and informal discussions. As the day progresses, the same environment can transform to host workshops, gatherings, cultural activities and conversations. Rather than prescribing a single function, the design allows occupation to define the character of the space. The planning establishes distinction without creating rigid separation. Flooring patterns, material changes, half-height partitions, shifts in volume and strategically placed walls subtly define work areas, cabins, conference spaces, discussion zones and shared areas. These interventions maintain visual continuity across the space while allowing different activities to coexist.

Materiality gives the space its identity. Contemporary finishes are layered with familiar Indian references through restored Chettinad furniture, regional textile patterns, textured timber, clay, limewash and glass. Nostalgic posters and traditional games introduce moments of familiarity and play, creating an environment that feels personal, informal and connected to its cultural context. Porotherm blocks form a defining element of the interior architecture. Used to create the conference room, cabins, pantry and bathrooms, the exposed blocks retain their raw texture while becoming an architectural feature in their own right. Subtle projections within the brickwork draw from native patterns, adding detail and character to the otherwise utilitarian material. The generous ceiling volume is softened through suspended fabric installations above the waiting area and discussion table. Their fluid form introduces movement within the space while creating a more intimate scale for interaction and contributing to acoustic comfort.

At its core, Bare Wall Space is conceived as an evolving platform for creative exchange. It is a space built by and for Bare Wall Studio not only to work from, but to bring different disciplines, people and ideas together. Its flexibility allows it to shift between studio, meeting ground, workshop space and social setting—making the workplace an active part of the creative community it supports.
